In a move to bolster its international profile, Western Michigan University (WMU) is aggressively promoting its study abroad and global engagement programs to students. What this really means is that the university is doubling down on efforts to give its student population a more globally-oriented education and experience.

Expanding Global Footprint

At the heart of WMU's initiative is the Global Engagement Program (GEP), which provides a structured pathway for students to earn status levels like "Global Bronco," "Global Explorer," and "Global Citizen" through a combination of campus events, coursework, and international experiences. These statuses come with tangible rewards like study abroad scholarships and letters of recommendation.

"The strong correlation between student success and study abroad participation is seen by anyone who has engaged in study abroad programs," said Joe Milostan, director of study abroad and international faculty enrichment at the Haenicke Institute. "Having worked in the education abroad field for over 15 years, one thing I have heard and seen repeatedly from students when they return from overseas is how much more confident and independent they feel."

Driving Student Engagement

To promote these opportunities, WMU is hosting a series of information tables and events, including the upcoming 2025 College of Arts and Sciences Study Abroad Fair. These sessions will allow students to learn about the 85 study abroad programs offered in 30 countries, as well as the various global engagement pathways and scholarships available.

The bigger picture here is that WMU is making a concerted effort to equip its students with the cross-cultural competencies needed to thrive in an increasingly globalized world. By incentivizing international experiences, the university aims to not only boost study abroad participation but also cultivate a more globally-minded student body.
